Weekly Reflection Day 6

This week we learned a lot about the right way to do things. On Monday when we began work we learned that many contractors don't put up strapping prior to sheetrock. This is due to the extra cost of putting it up. However by putting up the strapping it just adds more rigidity to the ceiling and should help stop it from sagging. However, when contractors do put up strapping they then according to the schools electrician run the wiring in between it. He says this is not good due to the fact that if some screws through the sheetrock later they could hit a wire. Due to this he instead drills through the joists to make a path for the wire up and out of the way. This will lead to a safer space down the road. We also learned about staining and applying urethane to the trim boards. This is a longer processes then many would think due to the time it takes to apply all the coats. These are important things to know just incase we do anything like this again. One other thing we learned is the map out where the lights are going in and make sure that they will throw off enough light. I did enjoy the work we have done so far. Insulation was a little bit of a drag. This is partly due to the full body suits we needed to put on to complete this job. However, putting up strapping was very fun and urethane and stain were the same. We were asked to complete all of these tasks to ensure it was done correct. Also due to proper planning by the people from maintenance everything has gone off without a hitch. The only thing that may not have been in the plan is we had to wait for urethane to dry. So during that time we helped fill some holes for the people at the ski area. This type of thing was not only fun but will benefit us. It is just like all we have done this week. Help us gain knowledge on many parts of the building process. Just this week we have done electrical, framing, carpentry, and landscaping. Which are great skills to have. All of this also help us achieve our goals of learning about building and helping plan the project and once completed it will give back to the community. That is a positive way to end a positive week.

Day 10

When we showed up today the project was looking really good with all the lights cut out. I began by applying joint compound (mud) the second half of the ceiling while Kevin sanded. We also cleaned up the work space. Then Garry came by and told us to clean the surrounding walls to get the room ready to begin paint. We did that and then broke for lunch. After lunch, we continued to clean and prep for paint. We also cleaned the shop floor of urethane. Today was a good day. Hours: 5:30 Total: 44:00 Second half with joint compound! The first half sanded! The first half when we left!

Day 1

The moment we rolled into the ski area to begin our day I had no idea what lied ahead. The day started with removing the old lighting fixtures that were down there. However, we made quite short work of that and moved on to putting up strapping. Soon a delivery arrived that we unloaded. But we were soon back on track. At about 12 we broke for lunch. After lunch work started up again. We helped Mike (the school's electrition) rough in the electrical. Day one was a success. Hours: 5:10 Kevin Removing Wiring.  The before shot. Kevin and Adam putting up strapping.  The strapping and wiring in on one-half.

Day 2

Today when we showed up we started out by putting up strapping on the other half. After that, we cleaned up the job site and broke for lunch. For the afternoon session, we began staining wood. This wood will be used as trim once the sheetrock for the ceiling is up. The lights for the second half of the project also were being put in by the electrician. Tomorrow seems to be a day for insulation. The insulation will be the biggest part of the project and take many days.  Hours: 4:40 The project as it now stands.  The stained wood.  Kevin Nailing.
