After this week our project is really starting to take shape. We were able to get up all the sheetrock, apply joint compound, and paint one side. By doing these things we were able to learn a lot about construction (mostly sheetrocking). We learned how to put up large 12-foot pieces of sheetrock with a drywall lift (the easy way). The key is to ensure that the first sheet it cut square because if it is not you will need to cut all the remaining pieces at an angle to line up with the first. When applying joint compound we were able to learn the importance of sanding and applying multiple coats. To ensure a perfectly smooth finish. When painting we learned you must have long and consistent strokes with little pressure. This ensures that the finished product is as consistent as possible. It was a fun week and one I truly enjoyed. The sheetrocking was really fun due to the fact it went quite fast and left a really good looking consistent. I really like how that went. We then moved on to applying joint compound which was also quite fun by nature of the work. The one part I did not like was sanding the joint compound off. That was a tough job and one entirely above the head. However, what came next was also fun. It was nice to get painting because of the finished product. I love looking back and being able to see what was done and have that satisfaction of another part of the job done. We were asked to do all of this due to the fact they all must be done to complete the job. There were very few surprises. However, there was one. After we finished the first row we forgot to cut out for one electrical line. However, the electrician was able to fix that by fishing for it and cutting out a hole after the fact. So the problem was easily fixed. We benefited from the knowledge of this mistake and all the other pieces of info we picked up throughout the week. It helped us achieve our goals of learning about construction and when completed will also benefit the community.
